More than music. It's where kids grow.

What is Makin' Mini Music?

Most music classes do music. We use music as a vehicle for something bigger — confidence, creativity, social skills and a genuine love of learning. Every session weaves together singing, movement, instrument play, craft and rhythm games into something your child will look forward to all week.

  • Music & singing
Live instruments, songs, rhythm and pitch — taught playfully, never pressured.

  • Movement & dance
Bodies and brains working together — coordination, spatial awareness, and pure joy.

  • Craft & creative play
Hands-on making that ties into the musical theme each week. Something to take home every session.

  • Social confidence
A consistent peer group, weekly rituals, and group activities that help shy kids come out of their shell.

Why it matters

Music is the original Learning tool.

Research is consistent: early music education is one of the highest-leverage investments you can make in your child's development. Here's what the evidence points to.

Cognitive growth

Musical training activates more brain regions simultaneously than almost any other activity in early childhood.

Language development

Singing, rhyming and rhythm all directly strengthen the brain pathways used for reading, speaking and comprehension.

Creative thinking

Improvisation and play — central to everything we do — build the comfort with uncertainty that underpins all creative and analytical thinking.

Emotional regulation

Learning to express feelings through music helps children name, manage and communicate emotions from an early age.

Social confidence

Group music-making builds turn-taking, listening skills, and the kind of peer comfort that follows children into school.

Parent-child connection

You're in the room, part of the class. The most powerful thing you can give your child is your presence — and music makes that presence joyful.

Julie Catherwood

Founder and Director

Julie's love of music began at the piano as a little girl, and it's a passion that has never left her.

With over 20 years of experience as a music educator, Julie founded Makin' Mini Music a decade ago with a simple but powerful belief: that music belongs in every child's life from the very beginning.

She brings that same warmth and dedication to every session, working with preps through to Grade 2 in schools. Her gentle, nurturing approach has made her a favourite with children and parents alike, and the reason so many families keep coming back year after year.

Jamie Catherwood

Community Program Director & School Music Teacher

Jamie grew up watching music change children's lives, and now she gets to do the same.

With a Diploma of Musical Theatre and five years of experience teaching singing and music, Jamie leads Makin' Mini Music's community program and brings the magic of music into her community classes.

As a mum herself, Jamie knows firsthand just how powerful music can be at home. She weaves it into everyday moments with her own child and has seen what a wonderful tool it is for little ones learning and growing.

Jamie's sessions are joyful, engaging, and rooted in a genuine love of helping children thrive through music.
